Road works ahead

Khonesavanh Latsaphao

CONSTRUCTION work began this week to rebuild a 375-m stretch of road running alongside the Presidential Palace in Chanthabouly district, Vientiane, to That Dam.
The work is expected to take one year to complete. "It will take us this long because we will have to stop when the rainy season begins because too much rainwater will collect and hinder our progress, explained a Technician from the China Transtech Engineering Cooperation, Mr Phomma Chanthilath
"First we will strengthen the drainage channel walls under the road, and then we will resurface the road," he said.
"We will have to stop work for about three or four months during the rainy season, and work will begin again when it is dry enough," he added.
Work on the drainage channel will be completed in the five months before the wet season arrives, said Mr Phomma.
The Director of the Vientiane Urban Infrastructure Service Project, Mr Ketkeo Syhalath, said that there were thirteen roads in Vientiane that were scheduled for repair this year. He hoped that all the work would be finished by the end of 2006.
"We are not going to use concrete for these roads, but will use asphalt as they are relatively minor roads," he said.
The roads included in the project are located in Chanthabouly, Sikhottabong, Sisattanak and Xaysettha districts. "When the work is complete, we will have plenty of modern roads in the city," observed Mr Ketkeo.
72 percent of the project is being financed by a loan from the Asia Development Bank and 28 percent from the Government, he added
